2017 Summer Reading List

Summer is well and truly on its way.

For me, there’s something magical about getting lost in a book for hours in the sunshine – whether it’s in the park, at the beach or poolside.

This year I am really back into reading and being part of the Black Girls Book Club community has reignited my enthusiasm for fiction.

Already I’ve read 7 books.  To some avid bookworms, this may not seem like much but it’s a huge improvement for me compared to last year.

My favourites so far have been Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston and I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou.

I also read my first Afrofuturism book called Binti by Nnedi Okorafor which I enjoyed and I’m mid-way through Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

I’m lucky enough to have 2 holidays planned this year and both will include a lot of laying around in the sun – perfect for guilt-free reading marathons.

I will be taking full advantage of the opportunity to indulge in the following books:

My 2017 Summer Reading List

THUG: The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas

Small Island by Andrea Levy

Every Light in the House Burnin’ by Andrea Levy

Homecoming by Yaa Gyasi

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

Noughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman

Around the Way Girl by Taraji P. Henson

Content Machine by Dan Norris

Being Black: Zen and the Art of Living with Fearlessness and Grace by Angel Kyodo Williams

The Power of your Subconscious Mind by Dr Joseph Murphy

Witch: Unleashed. Untamed. Unapologetic. by Lisa Lister

Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends On It by Kamal Ravikant

This list is, of course, a tiny drop in the book ocean but I only have so much time over summer.

To be honest, getting through this list is overly ambitious and no doubt I’ll be distracted along the way by a book not included here.

Because as any book lover knows, by the time you’ve finished one book, another 10 have been added to your wishlist!
